What Is ADHD?
If you are reading this, you will already have researched this topic for yourself or your child/ adolescent/partner/friend and even completed questionnaires that you have found online. You will know that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulsivity and planning. There are 3 presentations of ADHD: predominately inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and combined.
ADHD presents differently across individuals and age groups. You know that people can be distracted, forgetful, impulsive, disorganised, hyperfocused, impatient, and so on.
ADHD has similarities with ASD and some people will have both ADHD and ASD and use the term AuDHD.
How is ADHD diagnosed?
ADHD diagnosis is more than a result on a questionnaire. You can self-identify and that can be empowering but that is not a diagnosis. Psychologists, Paediatricians and Psychiatrists can diagnose ADHD. Whoever you choose to assess needs to be familiar with the AADPA 2022 Guideline that covers recommendations for diagnosis, treatment and non-pharmacological interventions.
My Psychologist will undertake a detailed interview, seek collateral history including medical, seek past reports, consider differential or comorbid diagnoses, assess further as needed (eg a cognitive assessment) and use standardised rating scales to assist with assessment. My Psychologists will refer to the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria to determine diagnosis of ADHD.
Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral for an ADHD assessment. However, there are Medicare rebates available for people under 25 who are referred by a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist for services under complex neurodevelopmental disorder.
My Psychologist asks that you provided a letter from a medical practitioner with medical and developmental history as part of the medical assessment that is recommended by the AADPA 2022 Guideline.
How soon can an ADHD assessment happen?
We understand that time matters. At My Psychologist, we currently offer short wait times and can schedule an ADHD assessment within 2–4 weeks.
What is the ADHD assessment fee?
The fee is currently $2000 (subject to change). We will discuss what the fee covers.
Do I receive a report?
Please allow up to 8 weeks for a report (subject to change). While you wait, My Psychologist can email you a statement with the outcome so you can share with school, university, TAFE or work and/or family, partner or friends. You can start the conversation about any adjustments.
