Educational Assessments
My Psychologist can undertake educational assessments that cover a child’s, teenager’s or adult’s academic skills and cognitive skills. Such educational assessments might be suggested by the child’s school, university learning support adviser, a medical specialist or even a concerned parent. We assess children and teenagers so they can receive curriculum modification and learning support and also adults who may seek accommodations to exam sitting.
What we assess?
We can assess cognitive ability and levels of reading, mathematical skills and spelling.
Prior to the assessment we collect information such as school and specialist reports to gain insight about the individual’s learning history and their current struggles or areas of giftedness.
What information is gained?
An individual’s areas of strengths and skills and weaknesses can be identified. Sometimes there are unexpected difficulties in someone’s educational levels and a diagnosis of learning disorders such as dyslexia is made.
Some will be identified as slower learners but also excelling socially or in other areas (such as sport or the arts).
Some will be gifted and will need opportunities to excel in their area of giftedness.
How long does the assessment take?
Educational assessments are quite involved and are dependent on the individual’s abilities.
We can conduct the educational assessments across two separate sessions.
Once the assessment has been completed, we need to analyse the results and write a summary report. This takes a significant amount of time and we will normally discuss the results with the individual or carer the following week or fortnight.
What written feedback is given?
We will provide a comprehensive report complete with recommendations. We will also discuss the results and recommendations with a school if needed.
What does it cost?
The cost of the standard assessment process for our educational assessments (including pre-assessment questionnaires, assessment, analysis, feedback and report) is currently $880 ($800 + GST).
The assessment takes approximately 2 hours. Feedback is provided after the assessment. The comprehensive report is written once payment is received. Typically the whole process will take 4 hours. The Australian Psychological Society recommended fee is $260 per hour. My Psychologist charges a fee that is reasonable and fair.
Depending on the needs of the client, this fee may be reduced or in the matter of more complex increased. Questions relating to the set fee can be discussed directly with My Psychologist prior to making an appointment.
Unfortunately educational assessments are not covered by Medicare, but many Private Health Funds will provide a rebate on the fee.
My Psychologist is experienced in billing clients in a way that achieves the highest rebate available to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses. Call us to find out more about how we maximise your rebate.
